A Wrinkle in Time:  Book written by Madeline L'Engle and read on the island by Sawyer. It involves three children who search time and space for their father lost in a tesseract.

Abdul:  Common Arabic name, Sawyer uses this name to refer to Sayid.

Adam:  Arguementative member of Juliet's book club.

Adam and Eve:  Biblical reference to the first people in Eden. Locke referred to the two bodies found in the caves as "our own Adam and Eve". Jack figures they have been there for about 40 - 50 years. One had a pouch containing two rocks - one white, the other black.

Adam Rutherford:  Shannon's father and Boone's step-father. He died as the result of a car accident with Jack's future wife, Sarah.

addict:  Someone who has a dependance on an outside substance. Although one can recover from addition, it is thought that they never stop being addicted, they just learn to avoid the addictive substance. Charlie is a heroin addict.

adoption:  Process by which the legal parents of a child are changed. Claire wanted to give her baby up for adoption. Susan pressured Michael into giving up his rights to Walt so that Brian could adopt him.

affair:  Extra-marital sexual relationship. We learned that Kate is not the daughter of the man who she grew up knowing as Dad, but rather was the product of an affair. Also, Jack's marriage broke up because his wife had an ongoing affair.

airdrop:  Jack and Kate noticed a flashing light in the jungle. When they found the source they discovered that it was on top of an airdrop of food and supplies with the Dharma logo on them.

airplane bathroom:  Just before the plane crashed, Charlie stashed his supply of heroin in the airplane bathroom. When Kate and Jack go to search for the cockpit, Charlie joins them in order to retrieve his drugs.

airport security:  Prior to the flight, Sayid had asked Shannon to look after his back while he shopped. Instead, Shannon reported that he abandoned the bag. Airport security pulled Sayid aside, a fact which Sawyer noticed and was made suspicious by.

aisle:  Passage between rows of seats. Rose, Locke, Charlie, Hurley and the Marshal all had aisle seats on Flight 815. Jack moved to an aisle seat (23-A) to talk to Rose.

Al Jazeera:  Arabic television channel made well known after 9/11. Also a derogatory way Sawyer refers to Sayid.

Albums:  Albums that can be found in a Dharma bunker near you!

Alcohol:  Jack makes use of the airplane alcohol for cleaning and treating wounds. At the time of the crash, he had a bottle of vodka in his pocket. Sawyer saves the alcohol for drinking, including a drinking game, "I Never", which he played with Kate.

Alex:  Daughter of Danielle Rousseau. Danielle gave birth to her on the island, but a week later she was taken by the Others. She still resides with the Others and was holding Kate when the Others captured her.

alfresco:  Open air. Charlie tells Shannon that he hopes she does not mind dining alfresco after he catches her a fish.

aloe:  Sun teaches Walt to use aloe leaves like toothpaste, giving us our first indication that she is knowledgeable in the use of plants.

Alvar Hanso:  Danish weapons magnate during World War II. Head of the Hanso Foundation. He funded the Dharma Initiative.

Amber Alert:  System designed to provide citizens with information regarding missing children in order to assist local police forces. When Locke organized a search party, Shannon stated there was no such system on the island.

ambush:  To attack by surprise. Jin and Sayid hoped to ambush the Others when they came to investegate the fire on the shore.

amnesia:  Medical condition wherein one is unable to recall their past. When Claire returned from her abduction, she suffered from amnesia and could not remember where she was or who she was with.

Amsterdam:  City in the Netherlands. Susan Lloyd left Michael to work in this city with Brian Porter. Michael called and said he was going there to see Walt immediately prior to his car accident.

An Occurance at Owl Creek Bridge:  Book Locke is holding when Sawyer confronts him. This short story, written by ambrose Bierce, denotes the tale of a man being hung as a spy during the Civil War. The twist at the end of the story is worth the read. (Author's two cents)

Ana-Lucia Cortez:  Passenger of Flight 815. She was seated in the tail section, seat 42-F.

anesthetic:  Medication given to dull pain. Jack fears for Claire's ability to deal with childbirth for several reasons, including the lack of anesthetic.

Angelo Bissone:  Elderly Italian man who was a patient of Jacks. He came to see Jack hoping for a miracle, but Jack was unable to save him.

ankle holster:  Gun holster worn on the ankle. The Marshal had one on him, from which Sawyer recovered the weapon.

Annie:  When Ray Mullen finds her on his farm in Australia, Kate tells him her name is Annie.

Antarctica:  Continent at the southern pole of the planet Earth. When informing Michael about the winds, he states that you want to head north as the only land to the south in Antartica.

Anthony Cooper:  Locke's father.

Apollo Bar:  Type of candy bar distributed by the Meiji Corporation in Japan. It has since been discontinued. Kate opened a tin labeled 'CANDY' in the pantry and found that it was full of Apollo bars.

aquarium:  Structure for holding water dwelling animals, generally for the purpose of viewing them or studying them. Jack figured out that the Dharma station where he is being held (Hydra) is an underground aquarium.

Arlene and Joseph Stewart:  Melbourne couple who wanted to adopt Claire's baby. They were to the point of signing the adoption agreement before Claire decided to back out.

Armory:  a supply of arms for defense or attack . After the explosion echoes through the underground bunker, Desmond is seen entering the armory which holds various weapons.

army:  A group of trained fighters for the purpose of defending or protecting a group or their property. Jack asked Ana-Lucia how long she thought it would take to train an army.

Art History:  Sun's major at Seoul National University.

artificial limb:  Prosthetic of either an arm or leg. Ray Mullen has an artificial right arm. When Kate was attempting to drag him from the wrecked truck, she accidentally pulled his arm off. It appears that Dr. Candle has an artificial left arm.

artist:  Michael describes himself as having been an artist in a previous life. He is skilled at drawing, however gave that love up in order to better provide for his son, only to have Walt taken away from him at an early age.

Asiana Hotel:  Jin worked here as a busboy. He gained a promotion to waiter, which is notable as it is the policy of that hotel not to promote from within, and he is one of the few who were able to gain such a promotion.

asthma:  Respiratory ailment evidenced by shortness of breath, usually caused by allergies. Shannon was diagnosed with asthma. Boone had her inhalers which were lost in the crash. Sun used eucalyptus to alleviate the symptoms.

A-Team:  80's television show in which the main characters went off on daring adventures. How Charlie refers to the expedition ot the Black Rock.

au pair:  Person who is hired to assist with child care and housework in exchange for room and board. Shannon's co-worker, Dominique is asked to be an au pair by one of the student's father.

auto dealership:  Sawyer worked at at least one auto dealership in the past, as that is where he met Jess, the female mark he was trying to work his grift on in episode 1x8.

Axe:  Sharp edged tool. Originally located on the plane for use in emergencies. On the island it has been used to chop wood/bamboo and to release Jin from being handcuffed to the fuselage.

baby:  Aaron was born on day 36 after the plane crash. He is the newest member of the group and Claire's baby.

Baby Huey:  Sawyer's nickname for Aaron. Reference to a large dim-witted cartoon duck in various animated shorts.

Backgammon:  Locke found a backgammon set and taught Walt to play. We find that Hurley also has played backgammon in tournaments.

backpack:  Item used to carry objects. Jack placed vital medical supplies in a black leather backback. Many survivors wear backpacks most of the time to carry water and fruit. Kate, Locke and Jack used backpacks to carry dynomite from the Black Rock.

backstory:  Dramatic exposition on a character. It shows the development of a character over time and adds justification for the character's actions within the main story. This is shown through a series of flashbacks as a character ponders events on the island.

Badge:  A symbol of authority. The marshal had a badge on him. Sawyer took it because he thought it was cool. When the last of the water supply disappeared, he gave it to Kate since she was the "new sheriff in town".

Ba-Gua:  Set of eight trigrams of the I-Ching. The Ba Gua octagon is the basis of the logo in and around the hatch. Ba Gua is important in Feng Shui, and relate to the balance of nature.

bait:  Object used to lure prey into a trap. When Jack wanted to capture Ethan, he and Sayid agreed to use Claire as bait. Claire agreed to do it despite Charlie's objection.

Bali:  Island in the Pacific. Kate told Sun that she was on her way to this island and instead she ended up on a flight to Los Angeles.

ballet:  Dance full of expression through rhythmic movements of the body. Shannon was a ballet instructor at the time of her father's death.

Bamboo:  Lightweight wood. Prevalent on the island. Main source of building material for the raft. Sayid used bamboo splinters to torture Sawyer.

bank:  Side of a river or a depository for funds. Kate staged a bank robbery in order to retreive a toy airplane which belonged to her childhood sweetheart.

banoffee pie:  Sweet pie made with toffee and cream. Sometimes includes bananas. When discussing what they miss from the outside world, Charlie claims what he misses most is banoffee pie.

baseball:  Game developed in the 19th century in the United States. A baseball was in the time capsule buried by Kate and Tom.

baseball cap:  Kate and Tom's time capsule contained a red Westhills baseball cap.

basura:  Spanish word meaning garbage or junk. How Carmen describes what Hugo eats.

Battery:  Device used to power electrical equipment. It has a positive and negative terminal.

Beach:  The beach is one of the two residences for survivors. Those living on the beach do so to keep the signal fires burning and because they wish to be there when rescue arrives. This group are considered to be the island optimists.

beans:  Sam Toomey believed he was cursed when he used the numbers to win $50,000. The contest was to guess how many beans were contained in a very large jar.

bedside manner:  Actions/words of a doctor that make the patient feel comfortable. When Hurley was telling Jack about the numbers and his view of them, Jack dismissed it. Hurley told him his bedside manner sucked.

Beechcraft:  Name for a type of small airplane. One was found crashed on the island.

Beehive:  While sneaking off for a fix, Charlie accidentally stepped on a behive. He claims he has an irrational fear of bees. He missteps, breaking the hive and sending a swarm of bees chasing and stinging he, Locke, Jack and Kate.

behemoth:  Something of monsterous size and power. Charlie made this reference to the monster on the island when talking about Jin and his detachment to everything and everyone due to his inability to speak English.

belay:  Montaineering term - to lower attached to a line. Locke sends Kate down into the hatch because she is lighter and he would be able to pull her back up easier.

Benjamin Linus:  The leader of the group of Others.

Bernard:  Rose's husband. He was in the tail section of the plane at the time of the crash. He survived along with several others from that part of the plane.

bicentennial:  200th anniversary of an event. James Ford wrote a letter to Frank Sawyer when he was 8 or 9. The envelope had an embossed image on the flap for the 200th anniversary of the United States and post marked Knoxville, Tennessee.

Big Mike:  The moniker used for Ana's partner with the LAPD.

birds of Australia:  Book Walt was studying for school. In the book was a bronze cookoo. When his step-father was not paying attention to him, he apparently caused a bird appear and crash into the window of the house to get his attention.

Bjorn:  Baby carrier. Charlie creates one from a blanket to assist Claire in her move to the caves.

Black:  One of the stones found one the cave bodies. One set of the colored checkers in backgammon. In Claire's nightmare Locke has one black and one white eye. Part of a duality to nature. Complementary opposite to white.

Black Box:  A device in an airplane used to record flight data and cockpit conversations. The survivors hope that the black box will be traced and they will be found.

Black Horse:  In a flashback, while Kate was driving with the marshall a black horse appeared in front of them causing the car to swerve and crash. The marshall was knocked out and Kate excaped. Kate later saw the same horse on the island.

Black Rock:  19th century sailing vessel located in the heart of the jungle, in the area that Danielle calls "The Dark Territory".

black smoke:  Appears on the horizon when the Others are coming. Danielle states she saw it before they took Alex. The survivors of Flight 815 see it on the horizon after Danielle appears on the beach.

blindfold:  Charlie was blindfolded before he was hung in the tree by Ethan Rom (and possibly others).

blood:  Important fluid in the human body. Jack, as the only physician, has had to deal with many injuries on the island of mystery.

blood type:  There are three blood types in the human body: A,B,O. When Boone suffered his fatal injury, Jack needed to find a matching blood type (A Negative) to give Boone a transfusion. Unable to do so, Jack used his own blood.

bloodhound:  Dog breed bred to pickup scent and follow a trail. When Shannon attempted to use Vincent to find Walt, Sayid reminded her she was using a laborador, not a bloodhound.

bloody rock god:  The way Charlie likes to think of himself during his earlier times on the island. As he detoxifies and becomes used to being on the island, he seems to see himself less as a god and more as on par with the other survivors.

Bluebeard:  How Sawyer refers to the other who blew up the raft when he is arguing with Michael.

blurry thing:  Richard Malkin claims he stopped Claire's original reading because he saw a blurry thing, and he considers blurry to be bad.

boars:  Three boars are discovered in the fuselage. This prompts the survivors to deal with the remains of those who did not survive the crash. It also leads Locke to form a hunting party in search of boar meat.

boat:  Vessel designed to travel on water by various means of propulsion. The Others are in posession of a boat, which indicates that they also have a fuel source on the island.

Bob Marley:  Musician. After the raft set sail, Sawyer started singing a part of his song, 'Redemption Song'. Sawyer and Michael discovered they have something in common in that they both enjoy Bob Marley's music.

Bo-Bo:  Name of Sun's shar-pei. It means 'a kiss' in Korean.

booby trap:  Presumably during her time on the island, Danielle has learned to set traps quickly. One trap snared Sayied, one almost killed Hurley, and another seriously injured Charlie's forhead.

book club:  Gathering where people meet to discuss books, most likely a book that has been agreed upon for all members to have read ahead of time. The Others have a book club, who we have seen meeting in the home of Juliet.

Boone Carlyle:  Twenty-two year old COO of the wedding clothing division of his mother's company. Step-brother to Shannon. Hunting partner to Locke.

Boston Red Sox:  Baseball team out of Boston. Dr. Christian Shepherd used to say "And that's why the Sox will never win the World Series" as a way of pointing blame on fate and circumstance rather than himself.

bottle rockets:  Sayid found bottle rockets (fireworks) in the wreckage. He used the bottle rockets as a communication device when he, Kate/Saywer and Boone/Shannon were trying to triangulate the distress signal's source.

bowline knot:  Knot designed to create a loop that doesn't slip. Shannon dated men with boats and this is where she learned how to tie the knot, which impressed Sayid.

Box Company:  Located in Tustin, California. John Locke was employed there as a Regional Collections Supervisor. Locke had conflicts with Randy, his boss there. It appears that Hurley may have invested some of his lottery winnings in this company.

box man:  Desmond's nickname for Locke. Reference to Locke's profession.

Boxes:  Object used for storage, shipping or to carry things in. Locke worked at a cardboard manufacturer that primarily made boxes.

Brian Porter:  Susan Lloyd's boss. He later married her and adopted Walt.

bribe:  Money or services offered to coerce a person to do something. Boone offers Bryan a bribe of $25,000 to leave his sister, Shannon. Bryan wants $50,000 instead, a sum for which Boone writes a check.

bridge:  A rope and timber bridge once existed on the island. It spanned a gorge across the trail toward where Danielle had her bunker. Hurley crossed it with ease only to have it collapse under Charlie.

briefcase:  Item used by businessmen to carry important papers, newspaper, lunch nad etc. Lucy presented Charlie with a briefcase for his new job selling copiers for her father, claiming it makes him respectable.

bronze:  Possibly too old to marry. Appears to be the equivalent of an old maid.

Bronze Cuckoo:  Chrysococcyx lucidus. Walt was reading a book 'Birds of Australia' for school and mentioned he liked the sound of this bird, cause it was funny. When Bryan was not paying attention, a bird crashed into the window.

bruise:  Place where blood vessels have broken under the skin making a black-blue mark. Shannon shows Boone a bruise on her temple which causes Boone to believe she is being abused by Bryan.

Bryan:  Shannon was living with this man in Sydney. Boone attempted to 'rescue' her from him, yet found out she was scamming him for money. In the end, Bryan left Shannon and took the money with him.

Bubbies diapers:  Diaper company that Driveshaft agreed to do a rather embarassing commercial for. Liam was too strung out to complete the job however, and they were fired.

bunker:  The hatch leads to an underground bunker, where until recently Desmond resided. This bunker was part of the Dharma Iniatiative, but seems to have been abandoned by that entity since.

busboy:  Jin's original position at the Asiana Hotel. Although they make a practice of not promoting from within, Jin was promoted to waiter, which was impressive to future employers.

Buster:  Hurley's childhood dog. Apparantly Buster would eat anything.

Buster:  Name of Hugo's dog as a kid. He told a story about him to Sun to illustrate that dogs will eat anything.

butcher:  Charlie's father was a butcher, and felt that his sons should train in the trade rather than waste their time on music.

Byung Han:  Secretary for Environmental Saftey in Korea. Jin is sent to his home by Mr. Paik to inform him that Paik was displeased. Jin ends up saving his life by beating him up, rather than let another of Paik's employees kill him.

- C -

C-4 Explosives:  Plastic explosive, very powerful. Three hundred pounds of this explosive were stolen from a Melbourne army base by a terrorist cell. Sayid was arrested to gain his help in tracking them down.

Cable:  A cable on the beach attracted Sayid's attention while he was walking the island. He followed it, which led him to one of Danielle's traps, in which he got caught. Locke used cable from the plane to lower Kate, himself, and Jack into the hatch.

cages:  Where Kate and Sawyer are held by the Others.

Cairo University:  University located in Giza, Egypt. Sayid attended this school.

Calderwood:  Officer that reviews James Ford's file in Sydney. He informs James (Sawyer) that he is being deported and is never to enter Australia again.

Campfire:  The survivors use campfires for light, warmth, and safety. They also keep a fire burning as a signal to potential rescuers.

Canada:  Large country to the north of the United States. Both Ethan Rom and Nathan claimed to be from Canada. In flashback, Kate told Ray Mullen that she was Canadian, but that was not true.

Captain America:  Comic book superhero-Steve Rogers-given strength through an experimental serum. Shannon refers to Boone as Captain America.

Captain Cortez:  Ana Lucia's boss and mother. She assigned Ana to a desk position in the evidence department. After Ana complained, she assigned her to patrol.

Captain Falafel:  Nickname Sawyer uses for Sayid.

car:  Common mode of transporation with a combustion engine and four wheels.

car company:  Business involved with the construction of automobiles. Sun's father owned a car company and took Jin into his employ there.

Carl:  Young man kept in a cage when Kate and Sawyer arrived at the Other's camp. He helped Sawyer excape. Later, Alex asked Kate about where he was.

Carmen Reyes:  Hugo's mother. Bitterly sarcastic about her son's lifestyle. She is not impressed by how Hugo changes his life after he wins the lottery. At her new house, which caught fire, she broke her ankle.

Carpe Diem:  Latin for Seize the Day. Charlie's pre-crash attitude was Carpe Diem.

Carrie:  A Stephen King novel about a girl, Carrie White, who discovers she has telekenetic powers. The book club of the Others lead by Juliet were discussing this novel when the Oceanic flight crashed.

carte blanche:  "blank slate" - open ended agreement between two people. Kate asks Sawyer for 'carte blanche' access to his stash in exchange for helping him track the boar that ruined his shelter.

Catch a Falling Star:  Lullaby sung to Claire by her father. Claire asked that Arlene Stewart sing it to her baby sometimes.

Cave-In:  A collapse of wall or ceiling of a cave. Charlie felt that Jack was slighting him so he confronted him inside a small cave. Ironically as he yelled, "I'm a bloody rock god!", the cave collapsed, trapping Jack.

Caves:  Cave town is where Jack took many of the survivors to 'dig in'. The caves offer fresh water and a natural shelter. However, some see the team who are creating a home in the caves as the pessimists who to not believe rescue is coming.

census:  a complete count of the population of an area. After Claire was attacked at the caves, Hurley started an island census to determine who was actually living on the island.

Cephalexin:  Antibiotic. Jack was giving Sawyer this drug to fight the infection in his arm. Jack threatened to stop giving Sawyer the medication unless he turned the Haliburton case over to him.

Charlie Pace:  Charlie is the bass guitarist for a rock band called Driveshaft. On the island he has found many ways to make himself helpful and has formed a relationship with Claire.

check:  Boone wrote a check out to Shannon's boyfriend to make him go away. He apparently has done this many times before. Unfortunately, it was just Shannon's way of scamming her step-brother out of money.

Chernobyl:  In 1986, the nuclear reactor at Cherynobyl exploded. The plant was sealed with concrete. When looking for a way into the sealed room, Sayid tells Jack the last time he saw anything sealed in this manner was Chernobyl.

Chewy:  Star Wars reference-Han Solo's right-hand man. Sawyer's nickname for Jin when they were on the raft. Chewbacca did not speak english, but was able to commuicate with Solo nonetheless. Jin has a similar type of communication with Michael.

Chief of Surgery:  Christian Shephard was Chief of Surgery prior to being stripped of his medical license. Jack may have succeeded him, but that fact has not been confirmed by the show yet.

Chief Resident:  Typically a doctor in their fifth year of residency. Provides organization and leadership to the hospital's residency team. Jack was Chief Resident at St. Sebastians hospital.

Christian Shephard:  Jack's father and former Chief of Surgery at his hospital. Christian's body was onboard the flight, as Jack was transporting him back to LA for burial.

cigarette case:  Charlie wooed Lucy Heatherton in order to steal something valuable to get money for drugs. Although he ended up wanting a relationship with her, he still stole a cigarette case that once belonged to Winston Churchill.

Cindy:  Survivor from the tail section. Was a member of the flight crew. On the way to the beach camp, she disappeared. Her fate is unknown.

Claire Littleton:  Claire was eight months pregnant at the time of the crash. She was kidnapped by Ethan and has since given birth to a son. She is involved in a burgeoning island romance with Charlie.

clinical psychologist:  Person who studies, diagnoses and treat individuals with mental illnesses and psycho-social disorders. Libby told Sawyer she was a clinical psychologist.

clip-on badge:  Sawyer finds the Marshal's badge, along with his gun. He deduces that the marshal may have been on the plane escorting Sayid, who he suggests may be a terrorist.

cockpit:  The cockpit area of the plane crashed inland from the main wreckage. The survivors find the pilot still alive and retrieve the transceiver before being chased off by the monster.

cocoon:  protective covering as with a moth. Locke uses a moth cocoon to demonstrate to Charlie that sometimes stuggle is necessary in order to gain strength.

coffee:  Caffinated beverage. Coffee only seems to appear in one episode, but oddly it appears four times within that one episode.

coffee table book:  Large book meant to be placed on a coffee table for guests to peruse. Part of Kate's story as to why she was in New Mexico. She stated she was commissioned to to a book of pictures of old theaters in small towns.

Coffin:  While following the specter of his father, Jack discoved his father's coffin near the caves. The coffin was empty and Jack has yet to find his father's body.

Colleen:  Member of the Others. She seems to be somewhat of a military leader among them.

Colonel:  Nickname given to Locke by his strategy game friend. This is a military rank, however we are told by Locke's boss that Locke has never served in the military.

Columbia Medical School:  Where Jack Shephard attended Medical School.

Comic Book:  Hurley brings a copy of Faster Friends (written in Spanish) on the flight with him. This comic book is later found by Walt, who can not read Spanish but who does enjoy looking at the pictures.

commercial:  In order to make money as their band was failing, Driveshaft agreed to do a commercial for Bubbies diapers.

commitment:  An obligation to something or someone. Christian tells Jack that commitment is what makes him tick and that Jack has a problem with letting go.

common curry:  Spicey dish. When Charlie was sitting with Lucy and her friends in the bar, he told them he 'will not be shared like common curry'.

compartment syndrome:  Medical condition where pressure builds within the muscles and prevents nourishment from reaching the cells of the affected area. Boone's leg was crushed and the blood was pooling in an area of his leg. Jack could do nothing about it.

Compass:  Device used to locate magnetic north.

compound fracture:  Bone broken in such a way that it protrudes against the skin, and sometimes will break through the skin. Donald suffered such a fracture.

computer:  An aging computer resides within the bunker. According to Desmond the number sequence 4 8 15 16 23 42 must be entered every 108 minutes in order to prevent an unknown destruction.

concrete:  poured stone substance. The bunker is made largely of concrete, and Sayid made note that the concrete layer was unusually thick, at last eight to ten feet.

Conduit lines:  Bundles of electric wiring. Sayid told Hurley and Kate to follow the conduit lines to find the breaker box.

confession:  Religious sacrament in which a sinner confesses their sins to a member of the clergy. Prior to his success with Driveshaft, Charlie was religious and confessed regularly. He later compared being trapped in the cave-in with Jack to confession.

confidence man:  Individual who runs scams to bilk people out of their finances.

Connect Four:  Popular children's game. Lenny Sims plays this game constantly while he recites the numbers over and over.

Conner:  Tom's 22 month old son.

construction work:  Although Michael's first love is art, when Walt was born he took a job in construction so that he could support his son. Over the years Michael's dream of being an artist has slipped into memory and he has become a full time construction worker.

contested divorce:  To argue against the granting of a divorce. Jack contested his divorce from Sarah because he did not want to be separated from her.

copier:  When Charlie attempted to become respectable, he took a job as a copier salesman, selling the model C815. His drug withdrawl interfered, and he lost the job immediately.

Cosmo:  Short for Cosmopolitan. Which is a woman's magazine, or as in the case of Lost, a drink containing vodka and often lime and cranberry juice. Saywer claims that a few cosmos are pivitol to getting a woman in on his grift.

countdown:  Sequence of numbers starting high to a lower digit, usually zero.

cowboy:  Sawyer refers to Jack as cowboy. (1x8) Ana refers to Sawyer as 'the cowboy' (2x6)

CPR:  Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation. Not only are chest compressions part of this, but the airway needs to be open by tilting the individual's head back, so air goes into the lungs and not the stomach.

cradle:  Locke constructed a cradle for Claire's baby. He completed it on her birthday.

Craphole island:  Address Shannon gave to Hurley for the census.

croc hunter:  Steve Irwin has made a name for himself as a television personality, the crocodile hunter. Also what Sawyer calls the officer dragging him into the police station in Australia.

cross necklace:  Neckace worn by both Eko and his brother.

curse:  an invocation of supernatural wrath. The numbers have apparently caused numerous bad things to happen to many people, and many consider them to be part of the curse of the island.

custody:  Susan sued Michael for custody of Walt. He was persuaded to give up his claim to his son because Susan could give him a better life. When Susan died, custody was to go to Brian, who decided he did not want Walt and gave him to Michael instead.

Dance:  When Sarah was in the hospital with spinal damage from a car accident, she told Jack she just wanted to dance at her wedding. He fixed her back, she remained able to dance. When her fiance left her Jack married her, giving her a wedding to dance at.

Daniel Boone:  American pioneer and trailblazer. Sawyer refers to Locke this way as a nod to his tracking and leadership abilities.

Danielle Rousseau:  Member of a scientific research team that left from Tahiti 16 years before the crash of Flight 815.

Danny:  One of the Others. May be involved with Colleen. He is in charge of the work crew that Kate and Sawyer are put on.

dark territory:  Le Territoire Fonce. Danielle's description of the area in which the Black Rock sits. Apparently the monster "resides" in this area. It is in this area that Danielle believes her team became infected.

Dave:  Hurley's imaginary friend from when he was in SRMHI. Dave was (in Hurley's mind) a bad influence, urging Hurley to do the things he wanted to do but should not. Dave appeared to Hurley on the island.

David:  Jess's husband. Sawyer's mark. David was upset that Sawyer will not go through with the deal after David and Jess's son walked into the room, reminding Sawyer of himself when he was young and the same thing was done to his parents.

David and Goliath:  Biblical reference. Michael's attorney uses this to illustrate to Michael how daunting a task it will be to gain custody of his son and to prevent Susan from leaving the country with him.

decryption:  Process of decoding information placed within a secret format. Sayid attempts to decrypt the information contained on Danielle's maps but it appears to not make any sense.

dehydration:  Sickness brought on by depletion of body fluids. Jack states that to avoid this each survivor must drink at least half a gallon of water daily.

delusions:  Persistent false belief. When Claire claimed she was attacked in her sleep, Jack believed that she was simply having lucid delusions.

Desmond:  Denizen of the hatch.

destiny:  predetermined course of life events, believed to be unchangeable. Locke believes strongly in destiny, and that being on the island is his destiny.

destiny book:  Book that Tai Soo was reading from to Jin. He claimed that the book helped his grandparents meet eachother. From this book, he claims he can see that love would find Jin in the next year, and that it would look orange.

detox:  to free from an addictive substance. Charlie underwent detox when Locke encouraged him to give up his heroin. Although he complained of feeling miserable, Charlie managed to get past his heroin addition.

dewey decimal system:  Organizational system used in libraries. Books are sorted by topic then author. Sawyer states that Locke is doing this in the hatch.

Dharma Initiative:  Word on the logo of the hatch/bunker. The word "dharma" means 'protection'. It is defined as the 'way to higher Truths'. It is used in various Indian teachings. Can be interpreted to mean something similar to fate.

dialysis:  As Locke was getting to know his father, he found the man was on dialysis because he needed a kidney transplant. Locke decided to donate a kidney to his father so he would no longer need dialysis.

Diane Jansen:  Kate's mother. She was in Room 208, dying of cancer. Tom got her transferred down to Radiology for an MRI so that Kate could visit her secretly. When Kate went to see her, she cried out for help.

Diary:  Journal of thoughts and events. Claire kept a diary on the island.

Diazepam:  Often sold under the name Valium, strong prescription drug for anxiety and sometimes withdrawls. When Jack was moving the infirmary to the caves, Charlie discovered he had diazepam amongst his things.

Diego Reyes:  Hugo's brother. His wife's name was Lisa. She left him for a waitress.

different:  Bryan's estimation of Walt. He says that when he around, 'things happen'. Locke echoed this characterization of Walt to Michael.

dislocated shoulder:  painful injury where one's shoulder joint is separated. Jack's right shoulder was separated in the cave in, and Charlie had to help him put it back in place.

diving:  Joanna (and the diarist) were in Australia to go diving.

Dock:  Pathway (usually wooden) leading out over the water from the shore. It is usually used as a place to embark and disembark from a boat.

doctor:  Practitioner of medicine. Jack was a spinal surgeon at St. Sebastian Hospital. On the island, as the only physician, he takes care of many more types of maladies - from minor cuts to asthma to trauma.

Doctor Do-Right:  Sawyer's nickname for Jack. Could be a play on Dudley Do-Right from the Bullwinkle Show.

Dominique:  Co-worker of Shannon in the ballet class; also her roommate. She was asked to be an au pair by the father of one of the students.

Donald:  Survivor from the tail section. He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg. Died from his injuries and was buried on the beach.

doomsday button:  Name Hurley gives to the 'EXECUTE' button on the computer in the hatch.

doorman:  Person hired by fancy hotels to open doors for guests and hail taxicabs. Jin is hired as doorman for the #RL671'>Seoul Gateway Hotel.

Downtown:  Petula Clark song that Juliet played while preparing for her book club meeting.

Dr. Curtis:  Physician at Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute. He knew Hugo from his prior stay there.

Dr. Marvin Candle:  Member of the Dharma Initiative. Narrator of the Orientation film for members that reside in the bunker. It appears his left arm may be a prosthetic.

Drawing:  Picture made through some type of medium to covey an idea.

Dreams:  We have seen into the dreams of several of the characters on the island.

Drive Across America tour:  Driveshaft's American tour

DriveShaft:  Rock band in which Charlie Pace is the bass guitarist.

drowning:  Condition where the lungs fill with fluid and you attempt to breathe water instead of oxygen. Joanna drowned on the sixth day after the crash and Boone nearly drowned while trying to rescue her.

duffer:  an incompetent, ineffectual, or clumsy person; especially : a mediocre golfer. Hurley told Charlie during the Island Open that Charlie was just a duffer like him.

Dynamite:  an explosive that is made of nitroglycerin absorbed in a porous material such as clay. Used to blow up Arzt and the Hatch door.

electronic bug:  Device that can be planted nearly anywhere for tracking or eavesdropping purposes. Sayid found one in the smoke detector in the apartment where Essam and his friends resided.

eleven fifteen:  time Sun was to leave the airport and depart in a car - thereby leaving her husband.

elope:  To run away and marry in secret. Jin did not want to elope with Sun. He wanted to marry her openly and with her father's blessing. To do this, he was forced to give up his dreams and become someone he was not to please her father.

Emily Annabeth Locke:  John Locke's estranged mother. She apparently spent some time in a sanitarium. She led Locke to his father when Mr. Cooper offered her money to do so.

Emma:  Sister to Zack. Their mother was waiting for them in Los Angeles. Ana promised her she would get them back to Los Angeles. Emma was captured by the Others.

Essam Tazia:  Sayid's roommate at Cairo University.

Ethan Rom:  Ethan lived among the survivors for several weeks, but it was later revealed that he was one of the 'Others'. Ethan was responsible for kidnapping Claire and Charlie.

Eucalyptus:  Type of evergreen tree/bush with leaves that have certain homeopathic healing powers. Sun used a poultice of eucalyptus leaves to help alleviate Shannon's asthma related breathing problems.

experiment:  Procedure devised to prove or disprove a hypothesis. Jack believes the process of entering the code is nothing more than an experiment to see if someone would actually do it.

explosion:  Sudden eruption of force. Could be from a pyrotechnic or an individual.

- F -

Fabio:  Male model who was on the cover of many swoony romance novels in the 80s and early 90s. A metaphor for the ideal romantic man. Johnny compared Hurley to Fabio when all of a sudden he got up the nerve to ask Starla out.

failsafe:  Backup in case the unfortunate happens. When they were set to transport the dynamite, Locke suggested bringing extra in case one of the backpacks with dynamite exploded during transport.

Falah:  Iraqi who Sayid tortured while working for the Republican Guard.

false labor:  Suffering the symptoms of labor without it actually being time for a woman to give birth. Claire experienced false labor brought on by stress before being kidnapped by Ethan.

farmer:  Individual who runs a farm. Ray Mullen was a sheep farmer in Australia. He gave shelter to Kate until he found out about the bounty on her head.

Faster Friends:  Hugo's comic book written in Spanish. It is the story of the Flash and Green Lantern working together to correct a mistake they made involving a stranded alien on Earth.

Fate:  The first time we see tape on Charlie's fingers, the letters spell Fate (later changed to LATE). Fate also becomes a major theme amongst the survivors.

Father Aguillar:  Priest at Hugo's grandfather's funeral. He was struck by lightning during the service.

Figurine:  The cargo hold of the Beechcraft discovered on the island contained figurines of the Virgin Mary. The hollow inside of the figurines contained heroin.

fire:  While fire is used for light and warmth on the island, it is often used as a source of distraction and an attempt to trick people.

firing pin:  the pin that strikes the cartridge primer in the breech mechanism of a firearm. Danielle removed the firing pin in one of her rifles, tricking both Robert and Sayid into believing they had a viable weapon against her when they did not.

Fish Biscuit:  In captivity, Sawyer is being kept in a cage that used to house bears. He figured out the required steps to make a contraption in the cage release the "reward", which is a pile of corn, some water, and one fish shaped biscuit.

Fish N' Fry:  Restaurant where Claire worked for five dollars an hour.

fisherman:  Person who fishes. Jin's father was a fisherman, and Jin was ashamed of his father's lowly role.

Flash:  Comic book hero with the ability to move at blinding speed. One of the principle characters in 'Faster Friends'.

Flatiron Building:  Constructed in 1902, this skyscraper stands in New York City. When Michael was relating to Walt the things he'd like to show him in New York, he mentioned this structure.

Flight 815:  Designated flight number for the Oceanic Airlines flight which crashed, leaving the Lost characters stranded.

Fort Lewis:  Fort Lewis is located near Tacoma, Washington. Kate stated that her father was stationed at this base.

Frainey:  Private investigator Locke hired to gather information on his mother and to locate his father.

Francine:  Member of the anger management group Locke is involved in. She is angry about her mother taking money from her. Locke feels the amount stolen ($30) is nothing to be angry about, relative to the harm his father inflicted on him.

Francis Price Heatherton:  Lucy's father. He owns many companies including one that sells copiers and gave Charlie a job. He also was a member of a band called Protestant Reformation in his youth.

Frank Duckett:  Former con man. Ran a shrimp truck in Sydney. Murdered by Sawyer.

Frank Sawyer:  Con man. He conned James Ford's parents out of money and slept with his mother. James' father killed his mother then commited suicide. The name 'Sawyer' was taken by James a few years later as his own.

Freckles:  Nickname Sawyer uses for Kate

Friends of Bill W.:  Alternate name for Alcoholics Anonymous, after cofounder Bill Wilson. Jack followed his father to an FoBW meeting where he accused his father of sleeping with Sarah. Afterwards, his father gave up his 50 days sobriety.

Frozen Burrito:  Hurley was in the store buying a frozen burrito when he decided on a whim to play Lenny's numbers in the lottery.

functioning bulemic:  Disorder in which a person overeats then vomits. Boone's description of Shannon. He stated she has been such since high school.

funeral:  Burial rite in which a eulogy is given about the deceased. A funeral was held for Boone on the beach. Jack was returning to Los Angeles for his father's funeral.

funeral pyre:  Burial custom in various societies. On the island, it was decided to burn the bodies in the fuselage, not only to prevent the boars from raiding the bodies, but also in hopes that passing vessel would see the fire.

Fuse:  The wire running into dynamite used to ignite it. When it came time to blow open the hatch, Hurley insisted that Locke not light the fuse, but he did anyway.

fuselage:  The central body portion of an aircraft designed to accommodate the crew and the passengers or cargo. This part of the plane is largely what is left on the beach after the crash.

Gabriela Bissone:  Daughter of Angelo, traveled to St. Sebastians to help her father and be his translater. Jack was trying to comfort her after her fathers death, and she kissed Jack.

Gameboy Advance:  Game system distributed by Nintendo. Walt was playing games and used it as a way of blocking out Michael. The only time Walt addressed his father was when he said he needed batteries for his game.

garden gnome:  Mythical creature now seen on lawns all over America. Hugo and his friend Johnny went around the neighborhood stealing gnomes. They then used them to spell 'Cluck You' on their former boss' lawn.

Gas station clerk:  The gas station clerk where Hurly bought his winning lotto ticket had a press conference regarding the winning ticket at his store. He identified Hugo as the winner of the multi-million dollar lottery before Hugo was ready for anyone to know.

Gemini:  Astrological symbol for those born May 21 to June 21. Claire accurately guesses that Kate is a Gemini based on the fact that she is restless and passionate.

Geothermal generator:  Power system utilizing heat/steam from within the Earth. Sayid believes the lab/bunker is powered by a geothermal generator.

Gerald DeGroot:  Doctorate candidate at the University of Michigan. With his wife, they developed the Dharma Initiative.

Geronimo Jackson:  Band whose album Hurley and Charlie discussed while in the bunker. They are either very obscure or made up for the show.

git:  British slang for a foolish or worthless person. Charlie refers to Locke as an old git.

GL-12:  Name Locke uses to refer to his friend with whom he plays strategy games.

glasses:  Convex pieces of glass in a frame designed to assist in eyesight. Sawyer was reading so much on the island that he developed myopia. Jack went through various pairs of glasses and Sayid created a custom pair for Sawyer-lost in the raft explosion.

glue:  Sticky stuff used to bind two objects together. Locke created glue from animal fat for the construction of Aaron's cradle.

gnomes:  Ceramic statues, often about a foot in height and used to decorate lawns. Hurley and Johnny stole garden gnomes and used them to spell out "Cluck You" on Randy's front lawn after they quit.

golden retriever:  Dog breed with special significance for Locke.

Golf Course:  When Hurley realized that everyone on the island needed an outlet to blow off steam, he built a golf course with two holes.

Goodwin:  One of the Others.

gored:  pierced or wounded with something pointed. Michael is gored by a boar's tusks.

government sponsored fund:  A pivitol part of Sawyer's grift is the mark's belief in a government sponsored fund. He claims that if you invest three hundred thousand dollars, a government fund will triple it in two week's time.

Grandpa Tito:  Hurley's grandfather. During a news conference about Hurley winning a multi-million dollar lottery, he dropped dead of a heart attack. During his funeral, the priest was struck by lightning.

greater good:  A benefit larger in importance or degree compared to another.

Green Lantern:  Comic book hero whose power stemmed from a magic ring. One of the pair in 'Faster Friends', Hurley's comic book.

grift:  Obtaining money illegally, as with a confidence man. Sawyer runs a particular grift involving getting a woman to convince her husband to 'invest' her money with Sawyer, only to have Sawyer steal it.

Guitar:  Stringed instrument. Charlie played base guitar in DriveShaft. When he gave his heroin stash to Locke, Locke told Charlie how to find his guitar. Charlie has since been working on writing an album of island related songs.

Gun:  Weapon, usually constructed of metal, that uses gas to expel a projectile.

gunpowder:  Mixture of potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal. After Charlie was injured when he and Sayid were chasing Danielle, Sayid poured gunpowder in the wound and lit it. Doing this sealed the wound but was painful for Charlie.

Gut shot:  Wound caused by a projectile to the stomach area. Can be fatal even if treated immediately. When Shannon ran after Walt, she was shot (apparantly by Ana Lucia) in the stomach.

Gyro-Rama:  Local eatery that Johnny suggests that he and Hurley might find jobs in after they quit Mr. Clucks.

Haddad:  Head of the terrorist cell in Australia. He ordered Essam to be martyr in the planned assault.

Haliburton case:  Briefcases known for their style and indestructability. Kate and Sawyer found a Haliburton case, which Sawyer was unable to open. The case belonged to the Marshal and contained guns and Kate's toy plane.

halyard:  Sailing term derived from "haul the yard". Line on a sailing vessel used to raise the sails. Sawyer provided the cable needed to make a halyard for the raft.

Han:  Star Wars reference-Han Solo. Sawyer's nickname for Michael when they were on the raft.

handcuffs:  The handcuffs found on the island are the ones Kate was wearing as she was being escorted by the Marshal.

Hanso Foundation:  The Hanso Foundation is responsible for funding the Dharma Initiative.

Harrison Valley Police:  Police organization indicated on Kate's mug shot slate.

Hatch:  Concrete and metal hatch in the ground, with an unbreakable window and no apparant way to open it. Discovered by Locke and Boone during a boar hunt.

headphones:  Listening device placed over the ears. Hurley uses trying out headphones as an excuse to talk to Starla.

Heart and Soul:  Song composed by Hoagy Carmichael. Jack and Sarah play this tune on the piano in a hotel bar while waiting for Christian the night before their wedding.

Heart of Darkness:  Joseph Conrad novel exploring themes including morality, nature, good and evil. Jack refers to the jungle as the heart of darkness.

Heatherton C815:  Model of copier that Charlie was selling. Unfortunately, Charlie couldn't get the copier to make copies, increasing his nervousness and contributing to him getting sick.

Helen:  A woman Locke met at an anger management group. He dated her for a while afterward. She helped him steer away from the anger he felt toward his father by forcing him to make a choice and take a leap of faith.

Helen (phone operator):  Operator on a phone line which Locke pays $89.95 an hour to call. They have been talking for eight months. Locke wishes to take Helen to Australia to him, however Helen thinks of him only as a client.

Henry Gale:  Balloonist from Minnesota who crashed on the island with his wife, Jennifer about four months prior, possibly longer. When he was being held by the survivors, Ben tried to pass himself off as Henry Gale, but Sayid proved that he was lying.

hepatic artery:  The hepatic artery is the major artery in the groin. During surgery, it was this artery that Dr. Christan Shepherd severed while operating under the influence. The patient died as a result.

Heroin:  Highly addictive drug. Charlie suffers from an addition to heroin.

Hibbs:  Con man. He put Sawyer on Frank Duckett's trail. He claimed he was doing it as a favor, because of 'The Tampa Job', but he was actually conning Sawyer into doing his dirty work for him.

Hiking boots:  The first the dead survivors are treated as a resource (rather than people) is when Kate chooses to remove hiking boots from a corpse so that she herself can wear the sturdier footwear.

hillbilly:  Person from a remote or mountainous region. Artz's nickname for Sawyer.

Hold Steady:  New York based indie rock group. Hurley asked Starla to go see their show at the Troubador with him.

home pregnancy test:  Claire took a home pregnancy text when she was six weeks late for her period. Thomas tried to convince her that the test must be faulty, however she was convinced that she was pregnant.

hope:  That which keeps us striving for a goal no matter how bleak the outcome may be.

horse:  In flashback, we learn that the night she had escaped from the Marshal due to a car crash, Kate saw a black horse. She has since seen the black horse again on the island twice. Sawyer has seen the horse with her, and the horse lets Kate pet him.

hospital:  Jack Shepherd and his father Christian worked at St. Sebastian Hospital.

Hoss:  What Sawyer called Jack after Jack handed him a gun. Reference to Hoss Cartwright from Bonanza.

Howard:  Someone with the last name Howard is listed among the dead of flight 815. However, the seat Claire says he was assigned (23C) is where Jack moves to in order to keep Rose company.

Huggy Bear:  Starsky & Hutch reference. He was their informant. Johnny calls Hugo by this name.

Hugo "Hurley" Reyes:  Gentle giant of the island, Hurley is always willing to help those who need it. Hurley is the one person who knew of 'the numbers' before the crash.

Hummer:  After winning the lottery, Hurley drove a yellow Hummer.

hunting:  Predator after prey. Locke and his father, Anthony Cooper, go hunting as a way of bonding. Later, Locke came to see himself as a warrior/hunter.

Hydra Station:  An aquarium station, the Hydra station is where Jack is kept when a captive of the others. The station (at least where Jack is) is underwater. This may also be linked to the zoo-like area where Kate and Sawyer are being held.

hyperopia:  Optical disorder otherwise known as farsightedness. Sawyer develops this condition after reading anything he can get his hands on. Jack and Sayid construct glasses for him made from parts of two pairs of glasses left in the wreckage.

- I -

I Never:  Drinking game - a person states "I never-something". If they actually did it, they have to drink. Kate and Sawyer play this game and learn quite a bit about each other.

I-Ching:  "Book of Changes". Part of Chinese philosophy used in Confucianism and Buddhism. It is comprised of 64 hexagrams comprised of trigrams, each with their own meaning.

immaculate conception:  A pregnancy without a father; has religious connotations. Locke's mother, Emily, told him he was immaculately conceived and therefore he didn't have a father.

infirmary:  Temporary medical facility. Jack shares his shelter with the infirmary. When he discovered the caves he moved the infirmary off the beach and into the valley, and Sawyer took over living in the former infirmary.

inhaler:  Device used to propel medication into the respiratory system. Shannon used an inhaler to prevent her asthma attacks. These were lost with Boone's bag.

injury:  Damage incurred to a system of a living body.

internship:  An unpaid position in which a person gains hands-on knowledge in a field. Shannon received an internship at a prestigious dance company in New York.

interrogation:  Questioning of a suspect in an offense. Sayid was involved in interrogations while serving in the Republican Guard. On the island, he interrogated Sawyer, using various techniques, to discern the whereabouts of Shannon's inhalers.

inventory:  An accounting of items. When Hugo completed an inventory of the bunker's pantry, he found that there was enough food to feed one person three meals a day for three months. He decided the best course was to pass out the food to the survivors.

Iowa:  State in the northern middle region of the United States. Kate's home state. She returned there when she found out her mother was dying of cancer.

Iraq:  Country in the Mid-East between Iran and Syria. Sayid hails from Tikrit in this country.

irrational fear:  Strong fear that is beyond what would be considered "normal". Charlie claims to have an irrational fear of bees.

Island Open:  Name Hurley gave to the first tournament on his golf course - two holes, three par.

iteration:  a procedure in which repetition of a sequence of operations yields results successively closer to a desired result. Sayid is able to determine how long the recording has been running by calculating its number of iterations.

J boat:  Sailing vessel typically from 26 to 35 feet. Kate told Michael she spent two summers crewing this type of vessel in an attempt to garner a spot on the raft.

Jabba:  Sawyer's nickname for Hurley. He calls him this while inquiring him about his feelings for Libby.

Jack Shephard:  Jack emerged quickly as a leader on the island. He is the island doctor as well as the person most of the survivors go to when looking for help.

Jackass:  Play on Jack's name - Sawyer uses this disparaging term to refer to Jack.

Jae Lee:  Son of a hotel owner. A matchmaker set Sun up with him. Sun believed they would form a relationship, however, he had a woman in the United States whome he met at Harvard and planned to marry.

James "Sawyer" Ford:  Known for hording and stealing on the island, Sawyer is a grifter who may just have a tender side to offer.

Jane Austen:  Author-her books contained very proper 19th century women. Charlie told the women at the bar (including Lucy Heatherton), that she would be ashamed of their flirtatious behavior.

Janelle Grainger:  Character never actually seen on the island, but the author of a diary that appears on the ABC lost website.

jar:  Item used to hold something. Charlie sought out a jar of peanut buuter for Claire to get her to move to the caves. He did not find any but brought back an empty jar which he claimed was full of the "the best bloody peanut butter" he ever tasted.

Jason:  Kate's boyfriend. He appeared to be the leader in a heist at the bank, however, Maggie was the one who put him up to it. After Kate gained access to the bank vault, she shot her accomplices and ordered the manager to open safety deposit box 815.

Jason McCormick:  Picked up for assaulting an elderly woman in Echo Park. He confessed to the shooting of Ana Lucia. Ana denied he is the one who shot her. Outside a bar, Ana killed him with her service weapon.

Jeanie:  Locke's sister in foster care. She died when he was young. After her death, a stray dog took up residence in her room and comforted his mother.

Jedi moment :  Star Wars reference, slang. Difficult to define, but generally to using one's mental abilities to make a situation go in a different direction. Hurley tells Jack that his ability to talk Shannon down from a panic attach was like a Jedi moment.

Jess:  The woman who Sawyer was seducing as part of his grift in episode 1x8.

Jesus stick:  Eko's stick. It has various books from scripture written upon it: Revelations:3, Titus:3, Colosians (misspelled) T:4, 23rd Psalm. A cross and the word 'Hateth' is also carved upon the stick. Eko tells Claire it is things he must remember.

Jethro:  nickname Saywer uses for Hurley

Jin-Soo Kwon:  Husband to Sun, known for his bad temper. Does not speak English. One of the survivors who left the island on the raft.

Joan Hart:  Alias of Kate's. She gave the alias to a motel clerk and received a letter. It was revealed later that the letter told her that her mother was dying.

Joanna:  Barbara Joanna Miller died swimming off the coast of the island. She had been scuba diving in the great barrier reef. After her death, Kate tries to steal her passport.

John Locke:  Hunter and explorer, also a believer in destiny. Locke has formed a connection to the island, and fits there better than he probably ever did in the outside world.

Johnny:  Co-worker of Hugo at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack. He quit at the same time Hugo did. He appeared to be upset upon learning that Hugo won the muti-million dollar lottery.

Johnny Fever:  Reference to a DJ on the TV show WKRP in Cincinnati. Hurley refers to the sick U.S. Marshal by this name.

Judith Martha Wexler:  From Denton TX, listed among the dead of flight 815.

jukebox:  While trying to woo Lucy, Charlie had a friend play a DriveShaft song on the jukebox.

Juliet:  An important person in the Others camp, Juliet is Jack's "interrogator". It appears that she may have a relationship with their leader Ben, but we also have seen Ethan working on her house.

Jungle Boy:  Sawyer's nickname for Ethan.

Jungle of Mystery:  description Sawyer uses for the jungle on the island.

Kalgoorlie:  Small town in Australia. Sam Toomey moved out there to be away from people when bad things began to occur after he used the numbers.

Karen:  Liam's wife and the mother of his daughter Megan.

Karen DeGroot:  Doctorate candidate at the University of Michigan. With her husband, they developed the Dharma Initiative.

Kate Dodd/Austen/Ryan:  Kate was traveling as a prisoner of a U.S. Marshal. She seems desperate to get off the island quietly. She is involved in a love triangle of sorts with Saywer and Jack.

Kazoo:  Flintstone's reference. Sawyer's nickname for Walt.

Kelvin Inman:  Inhabitant of the bunker before Desmond arrived.

Ken Halperin:  Hugo's accountant. He informed Hugo about how his stocks were faring rather well despite the disasters striking everthing he was invested in.

Kevin:  Sarah's fiance. He balked upon hearing the extent of her injuries. The two never married. We can surmise he decided not to go through with the wedding or see Sarah again, although that is not yet clear.

Key:  Item used to open locks or to figure out a puzzle.

Keychain:  In Claire's flashbacks of her trip to the Dharma medical facility with Ethan, he had a silver keychain with the Dharma logo and the symbol of the caduceus.

kidney:  One of the organs of the body, part of the endocrine system. Locke was scammed into donating a kidney to his father. This led to much anger in Locke due to the scam pulled by his mother and father.

Kilo:  Shady character, possibly a con man, who Sawyer owed money to.

Kiss:  When Kate asked Sawyer for Shannon's asthma medicine, he demanded a kiss in return. She initially resisted, but later gave in. After she kissed him, he revealed that he did not have the medicine.

knife:  Locke is traveling with a case full of knives. This causes the castaways to question who Locke really is, but also opens the possibility for hunting on the island.

knife (lockblade):  Ana took a knife off one of the Others. This knife has 'US Army' stamped on the tang. She said that this type of knife hasn't been seen in about 20 years.

Korean:  Native of Korea. Jin and Sun are both Korean.

La Mer:  French for "The sea". Danielle wrote the lyrics to "La Mer" on her maps. It has not been determined why she did this. Shannon recognized it as the song at the end of the fish movie (Finding Nemo).

ladder:  After the hatch was blown open, a ladder was noticed decending into the shaft. Some rungs are broken making descent by ladder an impossibility.

Lance:  Skinny guy with glasses and red hair. Hurley mentions him while interviewing Ethan for the census.

laptop:  The powercell from a laptop contains a battery that could be used to power many of the inventions that Sayid creates. However, Sawyer seems to have gathered all of the island's laptops soon after the crash.

late:  Opposite of early. Charlie changed the strips on his fingers to read 'LATE' after initially writing 'FATE'.

latitude and longitude:  System of location on the planet. Each point is at the cross between these two lines. Sayid surmized that some of the numbers on the map were latitude and longitude for a point somewhere on the island.

laundry:  washing clothes. Rose took much of this responsibility for the camp, but would not do it inside the bunker (although it would be easier) because she does not like it in the bunker.

Laurence:  A friend of Hibbs. He ran a couple scams with him in the United States. He provides Sawyer with a 357 handgun with hollow-point rounds.

Laurent:  Child of the man Shannon claims she lived with in Saint Tropez.

lava lamp:  Fad from the 1960s-1970s. A lava lamp is seen in the Dharma Initiative Swan station bunker.

law school:  College of higher education for lawyers. Before Walt was born, Susan Lloyd was attending law school.

leap of faith:  Action taken toward a possible outcome no matter how impossible it may seem. Locke is asked by Helen to go with her and to leave the anger against his father behind. She tells him he is afraid because he doesn't know what will happen.

Lenny Simms:  Patient at Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute - he is where Hurley first learned of the numbers.

Leslie Arzt:  High school science teacher. Advised Michael to leave on the raft early due to the impending monsoon season. Died handling dynamite.

letter:  Sawyer carries a letter addressed to the real Sawyer, who swindled his parents, resulting in their deaths. He claims the only letter he ever wrote (when he was eight or nine years old) was to the man he is going to kill.

Libby:  Survivor of the tail section. She was a clinical psychologist before boarding Flight 815.

lifeguard:  Person trained to save lives during a water emergency. Boone claims to be a lifeguard. He is, however neither able to perform CPR correctly nor rescue a drowning swimmer.

limey:  Derogatory term for an Englishman. Stems from the 18th and 19th century when British sailors ate limes to ward off scurvy. Sawyer states he read in Claire's diary that she called Charlie a 'limey runt'.

list:  On the Other she killed, Ana-Lucia found a knife and list. The list was of the suvivors to be taken that night.

listening post:  Military installation set up in the Pacific during World War II. Lenny and Sam worked at one while in the US Navy. It was there that they heard the numbers.

living trust:  A legal arrangement where the assets of an individual are placed in trust with a named party. Shannon's stepmother and father had a living trust which left Shannon with nothing.

Lizzy:  Susan Lloyd-Porter's attorney. She berated Michael about how little time he has actually spent with his son and reminded him about who paid his hospital bills.

logo:  Emblem for an organization or company.

long con:  Con in which the mark is drawn out and given an idea which he/she takes as their own, however it is the con's idea. Sawyer demonstrated this in his former life and most recently on the island...

loo:  British term for bathroom.

looting:  Stealing of goods by taking advantage of some disaster, ie war or fighting. Sawyer got most of his island treasures by looting the fuselage, where most people would not go because it contained dead bodies.

Lord of the Flies:  Reference to a novel by William Golding in which a band of children make the transition from civilized to barbaric. Sawyer invoked this reference after he captured Jin and forced him back to beach after Michael's raft was burned.

Lottery:  State-run means of winning money. Hurley won $114 million dollars when he played the Mega Lotto Jackpot using The Numbers.

Love Connection:  90's gameshow where people were set up on a date based on video interviews. Sawyer referred to it when he asked Hurley if he was making a "Love Connection" with Libby.

Lucy Heatherton:  Lives in Knightsbridge with her father, Francis Price Heatherton.

Ludovico Buonarrati:  Father of Michaelangelo. Locke mentioned him in a tale about Michaelangelo when he was trying to relay to Boone why they are sitting and staring at the hatch.

lunchbox:  Kate and Tom's time capsule was contained in a New Kids on the Block lunchbox.

Madame Nutso:  Artz's nickname for Danielle.

magazine:  Various magazines were on the plane. Sawyer collected Playboys during his first forays into the fuselage. When all attempts to quiet Aaron's crying failed, Sawyer read to him from an auto magazine, which soothed him.

Maggie:  Kate's alias at the bank. After she shot Jason, she informed him that her name isn't Maggie.

magnetic anomaly:  Fluctuation in a magnetic field.

Magnetic field:  Magnetism is a natural force on moving charges. A compass is designed to react to a magnetic field and point toward a magnetic pole. Most metals are attracted to magnets. The hatch appears to be surrounded by a magnetic field.

maid:  When a young Sun broke her father's glass ballerina, she blamed it on the maid. Even though Mr. Paik did not believe that the maid do it, Sun's insistence caused him to punish and fire the maid.

Malcolm:  Officer in Sydney police station. Boone attempted to report his sister's abuse but the officer does not assist as he is not a blood relation.

Mama Cass:  Cass Elliot - Member of the Mamas and the Papas from the 1960s. Had a solo career before her death in 1974. Desmond plays a song sung by her 'Make Your Own Kind of Music' as a way of distracting intruders (also it appears he likes the song).

management training:  Classes designed to create leaders in a business. Jin postponed his honeymoon for six months while he went to management training for Mr. Paik's car company. He promised Sun they would have the honeymoon they dreamed of when he was done.

mango:  Tropical fruit. Sun planted a grove that included mango trees to provide sustenance for the survivors.

manifest:  List of a vessel's crew, passengers and/or cargo. Hurley uses the plane's manifest to create a census of who the survivors are on the island. Through this process he discovers that Ethan is not on the list - and therefore not a crash survivor.

Map:  Sayid removed notes and maps drawn by Danielle from her bunker. These maps portray sections of the island not yet explored by the survivors of Flight 815. A map of Nigeria was also located in a Beechcraft found on the island.

mapinguari:  According to Brazillian legend, this is a large nocturnal creature with a frightening screaming cry. The monster on the island has been hinted to be a mapinguari according to a hidden object on Oceanic-airlines.com

Margo Shephard:  Jack's mother who insisted he fly to Australia to bring his father back.

Mark Hutton:  Bank Manager at the New Mexico bank where Kate staged a robbery to retrieve Tom's toy airplane.

Mark Silverman:  Jack's best friend since childhood and the best man at his wedding. Jack attempted to save his friend from being beaten up in school.

Marky Mark:  Entertainer Mark Wahlberg. Brother of Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids on the Block. Boone teased Shannon about having taken down her poster of Marky Mark.

marriage:  Legal and spiritual covenant where two people agree to share their lives together.

Marshal:  An officer having charge of prisoners. Kate was on the plane being escorted back to the United States by a US Marshal, who was euthanized as he was suffering from injuries due the the crash.

Martha Graham Dance Company:  Company founded in 1926 by Martha Graham, a dancer and choreographer. Shannon obtained an internship at this prestigious school.

Martha Toomey:  Wife of Sam Toomey. They went to fair where he won a bean counting contest using the numbers. That night, they got into an accident where she lost her leg. She explained to Hurley where the numbers came into Lenny and Sam's lives.

Mary Jo:  Name of the woman who called the numbers of the Mega Million Jackpot.

Mary Magdaline:  Religious figure. Statues of Mary were found in the drug runner's Beechcraft. Inside the statues were bags of heroin. Charlie carries one of the statues with him.

mast:  Main spar on a sailing vessel. The raft was constructed with a mast, which broke during the first attempt to launch it.

matchmaker:  In Korean society, it is common to arrange marriage through a matchmaker. Lineage, education and financial status are all considered to find a suitable match.

Matthew:  Psychiatrist. He was helping Ana Lucia for four mouths after she was shot in the line of duty.

medical license:  Requirement to be a practicing physician. After the incident with Dr. Christian Shepherd in the OR, Dr. Shepherd lost his license and was unable to practice medicine.

Medieval Russian Literature:  Jae Lee's major at Harvard.

Megan:  Both Charlie's mother, and his niece (Liam's daughter) were named Megan.

Melbourne:  Australian city that is home to Arlene and Joseph Stewart, and would have been Claire's temporary home if the adoption had proceeded.

Melissa Cole:  Central Intelligence agent who approaches Sayid offering him the knowledge of Nadia's location in exchange for his betrayal of Essam.

Memoirs of a Geisha:  Reference to a book about an orphaned girl in 1929 who became a geisha, a traditional oriental servant/entertainer. At the airport, as Sun was attending to Jin after spilling coffee on him, a woman observed it was like Memoirs of a Geisha.

mental institution:  Hospital where the mentally challenged are treated.

Mesopotamia:  Country that existed between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in present day Iraq. Locke claims that backgammon boards were found in the ruins of ancient Mesopotamia, making the game at least five thousand years old.

message in a bottle:  Note usually sent out by shipwrecked people in hopes of getting rescued.

metronome:  A device used to keep time when playing an musical instrument. We see Sun practicing piano with the use of a metronome.

Michael Dawson:  Father to Walt, designer and primary builder of the raft. The first person who Sun confided her knowledge of English to.

military time:  24 hour clock used by military forces. Locke stated his appointed maneuvers with GL-12 were at 1300 hours. This is 1 pm civilian time.

Millicent:  Listed at the memorial as being among the dead of flight 815.

mind's eye:  Ability to see something before it happens. Locke, in showing Walt how to throw a knife, told him to see it in his mind's eye before he threw it.

mining colony:  Locke's guess as to the original destination of the Black Rock. The ship held slaves and mining equipment.

miracle:  Event which the faithful believe is brought about by some divine force.

miracle-worker:  After repairing Sara's theoretically irreparable injuries, Jack became known as a miracle worker. Patients, such as Angleo Bissone, traveled to his hospital in hopes of Jack being able to perform "miracle" surgery on them too.

mobile:  device of toys/images hung above a baby's crib to turn gently, pacifying the baby into sleep. In Claire's dream, the crib she found had a mobile made of tiny Oceanic airplanes above it.

Mohammed:  Sawyer's nickname for Sayid. Reference to the prophet of Islam.

molotov cocktail:  Glass jar filled with a flammable liquid with a stopper and a rag prodruding from it. The rag is lit and the bottle thrown at a target. The Others use one to destroy the raft carrying Sawyer, Michael and Jin after they capture Walt.

monsoon:  Seasonal wind shift in the Pacific, usually accompanied by heavy rain. Artz warned Michael that the monsoon season was approaching and the wind shift would carry them away from established shipping lanes.

monster:  Creature of unusual size, strength and all around scary.

Monster Eats the Pilot:  Title of a tune Charlie is writing, to be track two on his post island album. He is planning a comeback album of songs about experiences on the island.

Montan:  Member of the French scientific team. He lost his arm in the Territore Fonce. Presumably dead as Danielle killed her entire team.

Mortgage:  Loan taken on propery. Ray Mullen's excuse for turning Kate in was that he had "one hell of a mortgage." Kate forgave him and later tried to ask the marshall if he would make sure that Ray got the money to pay his mortgage.

mosque:  House of prayer in Islam. Sayid went to a mosque hoping that he would be able to make contact with Essam. Essam did approach Sayid after services were over.

Moth:  Winged insect. Locke used the tale of a moth escaping its cocoon as a metaphor for Charlie's withdrawl. When Charlie was trapped in a cave-in with Jack, he saw a moth in the cave and dug out through the roof of the cave, freeing himself and Jack.

Mount Baldy:  Michael's nickname for Locke.

Mount Vesuvius:  Sawyer's nickname for the hill they climb on their trek through the jungle looking for Michael. Mt. Vesuvius is the volcano that erupted and buried Pompeii.

Mouse Trap:  Children's game. Locke tells a customer that this is his favorite game. He stated he used to play it with his brother.

Mozambique:  Republic on the south eastern coast of Africa. Locke believes that this was probably the origin of the Black Rock.

Mr. Clean:  Cartoon character used to advertise floor cleaner. Nickname Sawyer referred to Locke by.

Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack:  Place of employment for Hugo Reyes. After he won a multi-million dollar lottery, he quit his job.

Mr. Ed:  Reference to a television show from the 1960s. Sawyer makes a reference to this upon hearing Mr. Eko's name.

Mr. Eko:  Survivor from the tail section. Has an accent that seems to indicate he is from an island in the Carribean region, or perhaps somewhere in Africa.

Mr. Friendly:  Originally, the survivors believed that this man was the leader of the Others. Now that we know Ben, it is clear that he is simply someone higher up in the organization.

MRI:  Stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Tom scheduled Kate's mother for this procedure so Kate would have an opportunity to see her.

Mrs. Shin:  Korean matchmaker who Sun's parents employed to find her a husband. Sun was instead matched with Jae Lee, who already had plans to marry an American woman.

Muffins:  Juliet burned her hands while baking muffins for her book club on the day that the Oceanic crash took place.

mug shot:  Photo record of a criminal used for identification purposes.

mulligan:  a free shot sometimes given a golfer in informal play when the previous shot was poorly played. Charlie corrected Hurley when he asked for a do over, pointing out that the correct term is mulligan.

Mural:  Painting on a wall or ceiling. There is one on the wall of the bunker under the hatch.

murder:  Premeditated killing of one person by another.

Music Box:  Box with tines that strike a series of bumps on a metal plate in such a way to create a tune.

Muslim:  One who follows Islam. The word means one who has submitted themselves to God. Sayid is a Muslim. When his friend Essam committed suicide, the CIA was going to cremate the body. Sayid stayed behind to give his friend a proper Muslim burial.

Nadia:  The woman Sayid loves. They knew eachother as children and were reunited when she was captured by the Republican Guard. He was on the plane in pursuit of her.

Naira:  Monetary unit of Nigeria. A roll of cash was found on the dead body of a man dressed as a priest.

Najaf:  Major political and religious capital in Iraq. Nadia was accused of being involved in a bombing in Najaf.

Namaste:  Originally a South Asian greeting, it is now used among Yoga practitioners and the staff of the Dharma Initiative. It can be used in place of hello and goodbye, but its meaning is more along the lines of "I greet you with honor and reverence"

Namhae:  Town on the South Coast of Korea. This is Jin's hometown where his father works as a fisherman.

nappies:  Australian slang for diapers. When the group was moving off the beach, Claire was getting frustrated over everything involved with the baby and stated he was wet and she ran out of nappies. Charlie attempted to assist.

Nathan:  Survivor in the tail section, from Canada. He was on a company retreat in Australia and stayed a few weeks later to sight-see. He was suspected by Ana to be one of the Others. Goodwin released and killed him so Ana would not find out he was not.

Needle wound:  When they recovered in captivity, both Kate and Jack discovered that they had a bandage covering a needle wound inside their elbow. It is unclear if this is a site where blood was drawn, or where medicine was injected.

New Kids on the Block:  Band from the 1980s. The lunchbox which contained Kate and Tom's time capsule featured this band.

New Mexico:  Admitted to the United States in 1912. Kate travelled to a bank in this state to obtain a toy airplane that belonged to her childhood sweetheart.

Nigeria:  Country located on the western coast of Africa. The Beechcraft found by Locke and Boone appears to have originated in Nigeria. A map of the country was found among it's contents.

nightmare:  Claire had a nightmare where she saw Locke and found that instead of a baby in a crib there was a pool of blood. When she claimed she was attacked the next night, Jack diagnosed her with anxiety nightmares.

nine millimeter:  The type of gun the marshal was carrying in his case, refers to the measure of the bullet casing. The case held four of them along with ammunition.

nitrogylcerin:  Unstable chemical found in dynomite. Artz warned Jack about moving the dynomite as the nitroglycerin, usualy kept stable by a clay compound, had begun to sweat out of it.

Noor Abid-Jazim:  Sayid's love. See listing under Nadia.

noose:  Rope tied in such a way for the purpose of hanging someone. Ethan (and possibly Others) fashioned a noose out of vines and hung Charlie as a warning to the survivors to not seek Claire.

Norman Croucher:  Double amputee who Locke says climbed to the top of Mount Everest because it was his destiny. Norman Croucher has not done this, however he has scaled Cho Oyo, the sixth highest mountain in the world.

north:  The direction from camp that Michael went in search of Walt. Locke felt he must have been heading that way intentionally. It is likely Michael was headed in that direction because of something Walt had told him.

Numbers:  4 8 15 16 23 42. These are the driving force behind the island. Or are they the driving force for all of us? The numbers appear to be "cursed".

OB-GYN:  obstetrician gynecologist. Doctor who would oversee a woman's pregnancy. Jack asked about Claire's OB-GYN allowing her to fly in her last trimester, and she claimed that her doctor said it would be fine.

Oceanic Airlines:  Airline company responsible for the plane that the survivors were on.

official:  one who holds office. Sawyer was deported from Australia after headbutting a high ranking Australian official, the honorable Warren Truss - the Minster of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Ofloxacin:  Antibiotic used for infections. Jack tells Kate to get the pills for Sawyer as his wound has gone into sepsis.

Oil Change:  Name of Driveshaft's second album.

Omar:  Sayid's superior office in the Republican Guard and also his friend. When Omar spotted Sayid helping Nadia to excape, Sayid shot and killed him.

Ontario:  City in Canada where Ethan claims to be from. Hurley owned a sneaker factory in Ontario before it was destroyed by fire.

Operation:  Children's game in which tiny pieces are pulled out of small holes. As the side of the hole is touched, a buzzer sounds. Locke compared getting the dynamite out of the chest with this game. He said he always got caught by the funny bone.

orange:  According to the book of destiny and Jin's friend, love would appear to him in the color orange. After Jin quit his job, he was walking along the river and saw a woman in an orange dress. As he turned to look at her, he bumped into Sun.

orange futures:  Hurley had money invested in orange futures. His profits went up after tropical storms hit in Florida.

Orange Smile:  As Kate removes shoes from a dead person, Locke gives her a creepy "Orange Smile", where an orange peel in his mouth shows instead of his teeth.

orchid:  Jin gave Sun an orchid when they were married. At the airport, he showed her an orchid he had for her and she changed her plans about leaving.

Orientation:  Introduction to a subject; briefing. Label on the film canister belonging to the Dharma Initiative.

orientation film:  In the hatch, Desmond instructed Locke and Jack to watch the orientation film. We learned a number of things about the contents of the hatch from it. Eko found a portion of the film while searching a box in the bunker originally inhabited by the tailies.

orienteering:  Using a map and compass to find your way from one location to another. Sayid was attempting to make sense out of Danielle's maps using this method.

Others:  Others are people who were resident on the island prior to the crash. Danielle refers to them as 'the Others'. They seem to mean to cause harm to the crash survivors.

oxygen mask:  Emergency gear on an aircraft. As Flight 815 was going down, the oxygen masks descended from the ceiling. Kate put one on the Marshal after he was knocked out by a suitcase falling from the overhead compartment.

passport:  Official document needed to travel outside of an individual's national borders. Kate was caught with Joanna's passport after she attempted to alter it.

Patsy Cline:  Patsy Cline plays on the truck radio while Kate and Ray ride together and are followed by the marshal. Ray asks Kate, who he still calls Annie, if they listen to Patsy Cline in Canada, where she has claimed to be from.

Peace Corps:  Volunteer organization that provides trained assistance in various fields to developing countries. Goodwin told Ana he was a member of this organization.

peanut butter:  Claire misses peanut butter more than anything from the outside world.

peanuts:  Peanuts are the last of the remaining food from the plane on the island. Later, Charlie seeks peanuts unsuccessfully to make peanut butter and fulfille a promise to Claire.

Pearls:  Jae Lee presented Sun with a string of pearls on the day he asked her to leave Jin. Sun did not accept, and Jae Lee later jumped to his death clutching them.

Pedicure:  Shannon manages to give herself a pedicure within the first twenty-four hours after the plane crash. Boone feels that this is a demonstration of her self-centeredness.

pen:  Boone suggested using a pen in the tracheotomy on Rose. Jack sent him on a search for pens to keep him occupied. Claire found that all three pens she tried to sign the adoption paperwork with wouldn't work, causing her to rethink the adoption.

peninsula:  Piece of land surrounded on three sides by water. After walking along the shore of the island, Mr. Eko noticed the beach is on a peninsula and may not be passable, and insisted that they turn into the jungle.

perforated lung:  Sawyer shoots the marshal in the chest in attempt to end his suffering from a slow and painful death. He mistakenly only managed to wound him, perforating his lung which would take hours to kill him. In the end, Jack euthanizes him.

pericardial sac:  The sac that encloses the heart. When Sarah was brought in, Jack mentioned that this part of her body was punctured.

phantom smells:  Odor picked up by the olfactory system from no apparent source. Jack explains to Sawyer that brain tumors can cause them.

photograph:  Sayid carries a photograph of Nadia with him. The back of the photograph is inscribed "You'll find me in the next life, if not in this one."

piano:  Musical instrument. Charlie and Sun both learned to play piano as children.

pickaxe:  Tool used in mining. When the chest of dynamite was located, Kate picked up a pickaxe to open the crate. Jack told her that would not be a good idea.

Pilot:  Person who flies the aircraft. The pilot of Flight 815 decided to turn around and head for Fiji when the radio went out. He survived the crash with a concussion. He informed Jack and Kate of their location before being taken by the monster.

pit:  Ana dug a large pit in the ground in order to imprison Nathan. When they recovered Michael, Sawyer and Jin on the beach, the tail survivors kept them in the pit.

Pizza Bin:  Local eatery that Johnny suggests that he and Hurley might find jobs in after they quit Mr. Clucks.

Plane:  There are two known planes on the island. One is Flight 815 in at least three pieces across the island. The other is a Beechcraft piloted by what were apparently Nigerian drug runners.

platinum record:  In the music industry, it equates to a million records sold. Charlie believes that the sale of DriftShaft's albums must have spiked due to the news of his death in the plane crash.

Playboy:  Pornographic magazine created by Hugh Heffner. Most guys buy them for the indepth articles. Sawyer finds a few copies in the fuselage.

poison:  Substance derived from various plants or chemicals meant to incapacitate or kill.

Polar Bear:  Ursus martimus Usually found in the Arctic, however there have been at least two spotted on the island.

police record:  Record of offenses perpetrated by an individual. When Sawyer was arrested for head-butting the Minister of Forestry, his record was read to him. Kate apparently has a record as well, details are unknown.

ponce:  English slang: an effeminate male. During the altercation over Claire's diary, Charlie told Sawyer he hits like a ponce.

Ponce de Leon:  16th century explorer; first European to set foot on Florida. Sawyer called Ana this name when she said they were to continue to the beach camp without Mr. Eko to guide them.

Pontiac Bonneville:  First produced in 1958. This is the make of car that struck Michael as he was crossing the street, hit Locke in a parking lot, and was involved in Kate's car crash.

Ponyboy:  Reference to 'The Outsiders' character. Johnny calls Hugo this.

post traumatic stress:  Condition suffered after a traumatic event, can cause sleeplessness, depression, nightmares, detachment, etc. Jack diagnoses Rose with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Pousette Dart Band:  Hurley choses to play this band's album, Amnesia while he and Charlie are going through the stacks of wax on the bunker's shelf. The song they play is titled "Fall on Me". Sayid calls the music depressing.

Power Rangers:  Children's show. Walt was watching it at 5:23am, the morning of the flight. Due to Walt's insitance on watching the show loudly, an argument started between father and son.

pregnant:  With child. Claire was pregnant by her ex-boyfriend Thomas at the time of the plane crash.

prescription drugs:  Prescription medications, particularly antibiotics, are at a premium on the island. There is no available substitute for them, forcing Jack to ration them carefully. The desire to not use them up impacts his decisions when treating the injured.

pressure trigger:  Device used in explosive traps. A weight upon the trigger presses down a plunger to activate a reaction within the device and as the weight is lifted, the explosive detonates. In his search for Danielle, Hugo stepped on such a device.

Priest:  Religious official. The drug smugglers Locke and Boone found were dressed as priests.

prosthetic:  Man-made limb created to appear like the original limb. Ray Mullen had a prosthetic right arm.

Protestant Reformation:  Name of the band which Frank Heatherton was a member. Reference to a religious movement in Europe during the 16th century.

psychic:  Individual who can forsee future events through the mind's eye. Claire went to a psychic who warned her about her child and who should care for it. It was this psychic who insisted she take Flight 815 to Los Angeles.

punishment:  Activity incurred for doing a wrong. A number of survivors wonder if they are not on the island as some sort of punishment for things they have done wrong in their lives.

Quarantine:  A state of enforced isolation, often to prevent the spread of disease or bugs. When the hatch door was blown off, Kate noticed that the underside read Quarantine.

Queen Mary:  An ocean-going cruise ship that sails as part of the Cunard line. Michael invokes this ship as a comparison to the actual size of the raft.

Rachel:  Claire's friend who took her to see Richard Malkin.

Rachel:  Tom's wife. Her parents reside in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

radar emitter:  Sends out a signal that echoes off any solid objects within a prescribed radius.

Raft:  Constructed of bamboo, airplane parts and a tarp, the raft used by the survivors to hopefully attract the attention of a ship or airplane.

Raggs:  Police officer who worked for the LAPD with Ana and her mother.

Rambina:  Reference to a tough movie character played by Sylvester Stallone. Sawyer referred to Ana-Lucia this way.

Ranch Composite:  Dharma supplied salad dressing that Hurley takes a liking to. He hides it and uses it to dip just about anything in. The large jugs it comes in have also been used on the island for target practice.

Randy (Hurley Flashback):  Hugo Reyes' boss at Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack. It has been confirmed in the Lost S2 DVDs that this is the same person as Locke's boss.

Randy (Locke Flashback):  Locke's boss at the box company. It has been confirmed by the Lost S2 DVD that this is the same person as Hugo Reyes' boss.

rape-caves:  name Shannon gave the caves after finding out that Claire was attacked there.

Ray Mullen:  Sheep farmer in Australia. Kate took refuge in his sheep pen where he found her the next morning. Kate stayed on the farm about three months when he discovered the reward and decided to turn her in.

record player:  Device for playing vinyl music disks. One of the luxury items in the bunker, it is popular with the survivors on button duty.

Redemption Song:  Written and performed by Bob Marley. Sawyer sings a portion of this song as the raft leaves the island. The song lyrics foreshadow the coming of the Others as well as refers back to the Black Rock.

redneck:  Term for a Southern-type person. Usually meant with a derogatory connotation. Sawyer is called "redneck" by several people on the island.

redshirt:  term used to refer to characters with little or no speaking lines, who are used as filler in scenes. Also Star Trek reference. Boone mentions to Locke how characters on away missions wore redshirts and eventually died.

regional collections supervisor:  Locke's position with the box company.

reject from VH-1 has-beens:  Sawyer's description of Charlie. Part of his sarcastic answer to Walt's assertion that there could be lot's of other people on the island. VH-1 is a music television station specializing in lighter music.

Republican Guard:  Elite ground unit of the Iraqi military. Sayid was a member of this unit during the Gulf War, working as a Communications Officer.

Richard Malkin:  Psychic who Claire went to see. He refused to give her a reading during her first visit, but after her second he was adamant that she listen to him.

rifle:  Shooting weapon designed for long range.

ring:  Rose cherishes her husband's wedding ring, which she wears on a chain around her neck. Rose explained to Jack that she carries the ring when they fly because her husband's fingers swell.

Rio Dulce:  Home of a small theater in New Mexico. Mark Hutton, the bank manager, recommended that Kate use the theater in her book.

riot act:  To criticize harshly. Claire told Locke that Charlie read her the riot act for waking Aaron when she heard Shannon scream.

riptide:  a strong usually narrow surface current flowing outward from a shore that results from the return flow of waves and wind-driven water. Joanna gets caught in a riptide and neither Boone nor Jack are able to save her.

Robbie Hewitt:  ASIS agent who, with Melissa Cole, enlists Sayid's help to get back stolen explosives.

Robert:  Danielle's love. He was a part of the science team that shipwrecked on the island. Gave her a music box that comforts her on the island. She killed him after she believed he became infected.

Rome:  Capital city of Italy. Susan Lloyd-Porter was employed there for a time.

rosary:  String of beads used for reciting prayers in Catholicism. Locke found a rosary hanging on a tree branch which came from the corpse of a man dressed as a priest.

Rose:  Passenger aboard Flight 815. She sat in 23-D.

rudder:  Part of a boat necessary for steering. Michael put Walt in charge of the rudder for a while as they sailed north by northeast. After they hit a log, the rudder broke off and Sawyer had to retrieve it.

run away:  To flee from something. An occuring theme in LOST.

Sabrina Carlisle:  Boone's mother. She owns the largest wedding business in the United States. When her husband (and Shannon's father) died in a car accident, she refused to give Shannon any money to support herself.

sacrifice:  the act of giving up something precious to you in hopes of getting something in return. Locke believes that the island demands sacrifies, such as Charlie giving up his drugs for the return of his guitar, and the sacrifice of Boone's life.

safe combination:  Locke manually changed the safe combination. The new combination was: two times right to 25, two times left to 29, once right to 40.

safety deposit box:  Rented box in a bank for which there are two keys. Tom's toy airplane was placed in a bank in New Mexico. Kate staged a hold-up to get access to the box, because she was not on the signatory card even though she had the key.

sailing:  Method of moving with the wind upon the water. Jin and Michael designed a raft with a sail to carry four people off the island.

Saint Sebastian Hospital:  Los Angeles area hospital where Jack and Christian Shephard worked. It is likely that this is also where Shannon's father died.

Saint Tropez:  French city on the French Riviera along the Mediterranean. Shannon lived there for a while. It is where she picked up French.

Sam Toomey:  Member of the US Navy during World War II. Heard the numbers with Leonard Simms. Used the numbers to win a bean guessing contest and unfortunate events began to occur. Eventually committed suicide. Survived by his wife, Martha, in Kalgoorlie, Australia.

Santa Rosa Mental Health Institute:  Institution for people with mental disorders. Hurley spend some time there. It is where he met Leonard Simms, who remains there. Locke's mother spent some time in the sanitatarium.

Sarah:  The woman who eventually became Jack's wife. She was involved in a horrible auto accident that crushed her spine. Jack performed surgery on her and healed her. Her fiance left her after the accident, but she then decided to marry Jack.

sassafras:  Sawyer's nickname for Kate. Sassafras is a type of tree, the roots are used to make tea.

Savior:  Charlie was encouraged by his mother to believe he needed to save the family from poverty. As an adult, he seems to feel like he is responsible for being Claire and Aaron's savior.

Sawbucks:  Hibbs' nickname for Sawyer. A sawbuck is slang for ten dollars.

Sayid Jarrah:  Former military communications officer and a survivor of the Oceanic crash. He has taken a role in organizing people to form an island society and in creating devices to attempt to make contact outside of the island.

scam:  A trick or swindle. Sawyer would run scams in order to bilk individuals out of their money.

schizophrenia:  Mental illness chracterized by abnormal behavior or moods. Locke's mother Emily was diagnosed with this illness and was admitted to Santa Rosa Mental Health Institution.

science team:  Danielle was part of a science team that heard the transmission of the numbers. When they went to investigate, they were shipwrecked on the island. Danielle killed all of the other members of her team.

Scott Jackson:  Passenger on Flight 815. He worked for an internet company in Santa Cruz. He was murdered by Ethan Rom during which act many of the bones in his body were broken.

scratches:  During Claire's abduction, she scratched Danielle. Her memory was damaged due to the shock of the abduction. When she saw Danielle again and the scratches on her arm, she remembered scratching her. It was at this point that Danielle kidnapped Aaron.

scuba diving:  Joanna and the diarist were both in Australia to go scuba diving.

sea urchin:  Spiny sea creature which is used by the survivors both as food and as a tool.

Seargent Sam Austen:  The man who raised Kate as his daughter. She learned as an adult that he was not her biological father. He also appears in a scene with Sayid, when they both were briefly in the same transport vehicle.

seat:  After the crash, the airplane seats were used as furniture, but also more creatively, they were used to form an examination table for Jack and in the construction of the raft.

second-class citizen:  Individual below the status of everyone else. Michael felt he was being treated as such when Locke dismissed his assistance with the search party. Arzt expressed similar frustration with being on the outside of the main island clique.

sector:  Subdivision of an area, typically used by the military. Desmond's bunker is in Sector 3 of the island.

security system:  Danielle's characterization for what others call the monster on the island. It is unknown how accurate this is.

Sedatives:  Medication meant to calm or induce sleep. After her intense nightmare and being attacked by Ethan, Jack wanted to give Claire a mild sedative to help her relax. Claire became more hysterical and refused to take them.

seeds:  That from which plants grow. Sun and Kate collected seeds for a small garden and tree grove to provide sustenance for the survivors.

self-titled debut:  When a musical performer's first public album is named after themselves (or the musical group), it is called a self-titled debut. Locke reveals that Driveshaft's first album was self-titled.

semantics:  Relates to the connotation of words.

Seoul Gateway Hotel:  Jin applied for and obtained the position of doorman at this hotel. Jin quit after suffering one too many insults from his boss.

Seoul National University:  Sun attended this school of higher learning where she studied art history.

sepsis:  a toxic condition resulting from the spread of bacteria or their products from a focus of infection. Jack worries that the marshal go into sepsis without proper antibiotics.

sewing:  Jack drafts Kate to perform impromptu surgery on his injuries from the crash when she admits to having sewed the curtains in her apartment.

shackles:  Typically of iron. Used to secure people to an area. In the Black Rock, the skeletons of slaves were shackled to the bulkheads.

shampoo:  soap for washing one's hair. Kate took shampoo out of the bunker inventory against Jack's wishes, which upset Hurley and demonstrated Kate's sense of entitlement.

Shannon Rutherford:  Step-sister to Boone. Involved in an island relationship with Sayid. Left to care for Vincent when Walt left on the raft.

shark:  While floating on pieces of the destroyed raft, Michael and Sawyer were attacked by a shark, which Michael shot and killed. The shark has the hatch logo on it, which may indicate it is the water's security device.

shar-pei:  Breed of dog from China. Jin took the dog as a thank you from a man who felt Jin had spared his life, and gave it to Sun.

sheep pen:  Ray Mullen finds Kate sleeping in his sheep pen.
